When the Bombs Fall
What does hope look like… when the bombs are falling?
On Palm Sunday, while churches around the world waved palm branches and sang “Hosanna,” the city of Sumy, Ukraine was bombed. 34 civilians, including children, were killed.
Some of the images were too horrific to share. But we saw them. And they broke our hearts.

A Road Into the War Zone
At that same moment, vans from Hope Partners International were crossing into Izmail, a city on the other side of Ukraine—filled with “Bags of Hope.”
This wasn’t the first time. Since the war began, we’ve made this drive over and over. Partnering with a home church in Izmail, we’ve gone into communities where hope feels lost—cities bombed out, families displaced, children carrying invisible wounds.

A Different Kind of Palm Sunday
And yet, on Palm Sunday, as the world remembered Christ’s path to the cross, we watched a different road unfold.
Hundreds of families received 10 kilos of food, essentials, and for the children—a few sweets. Small comfort for the trauma they carry. But in the midst of sorrow, we witnessed something else:
Hope and Joy.
Children laughing during a Bible lesson. Families singing in church. A choir lifting their voices in worship, not despite the war—but right in the middle of it.

The Gospel in Motion
Hope doesn’t hide from tragedy. It doesn’t wait for the world to be safe.
Hope shows up. With hands full and hearts open.
This is what Holy Week teaches us. That God enters the suffering. That He walks roads that bleed. And that, even in a time of war, He calls us to do the same.
